Refugees & Asylum seekers face many difficulties in a strange and sometimes apprently hostile land. Low self-esteem, poor levels of confidence, and perhaps limited English may adversely affect their interactions with the Authorities and restrict their prospects of contributing to and in time integrating into the host society.
Drawing on the principles of integrative art therapy, NLP and non-violent communication, I bring extensive facilitation experience to design a programme that gently helps people move on from struggling to believe in their own right to exist, through acceptance to laughter, sharing of tales, perhaps breaking bread together, and a feeling of achievement. With encouragement and coaching, sharing may begin with simple guided conversation, and gradually work up to sharing stories in larger groups, or even public performance. I encourage a mult-sensory approach which is invaluable for people who do not have good level of a shared language. An example of such an approach was work with Sheffield Refugee Asylum Seeker Action Group and City of Sanctuary which culminated in a public performance by participants to raise awareness of the issues.
